Overview

I programmed a section of an ice cream packing machine using Structured Text (ST) in a PLC environment. The goal was to control product grouping on a conveyor using sensors and solenoid valves to ensure smooth and reliable packaging.

The challenge

The packing machine needed precise control to:
  • Detect incoming ice cream products
  • Group them correctly before packaging
  • Prevent misalignment or product jams
Incorrect timing between sensors and actuators could cause grouping errors or machine stops.
The task was to translate the mechanical process into stable and predictable PLC logic.

My solution

I programmed the control logic using Structured Text in the PLC system.
A photoelectric sensor detects incoming products on the conveyor. Based on sensor signals and timing conditions, the system controls solenoid valves to:
  • Stop products
  • Release products
  • Guide products into correct groups
The logic was built using modular function blocks with clear:
  • Enable conditions
  • Reset logic
  • Error handling
This ensured stable machine behavior and reliable grouping during continuous operation.
The system was tested and validated using simulation tools and runtime monitoring inside the PLC environment.

The result

The machine section operates reliably with controlled product grouping.
Main results:
  • Accurate product detection
  • Correct grouping before packaging
  • Reduced risk of jams
  • Stable and predictable PLC behavior
  • Clear, maintainable control logic
The project demonstrates practical PLC programming and industrial automation skills.
